2026, Stainless steel mesh, 14x7x14 in.
I am a lifelong fiber artist with experience in weaving, sewing, basketry, embroidery, felting, dyeing, knitting, crochet, and fiber sculpture. I have been weaving for over 50 years, and for the last 30 years I have been weaving with wire to create sculptural expressions out of a woven metal fabric. Continuing my exploration of metal as a material, I have begun working with a stainless steel mesh employing fiber techniques and expressions. I am able to heat color the mesh by using propane and butane torches. Once colored, I manipulate the material as though it is a piece of fabric.
The undulations and flow of the material present as a gossamer fabric with subtle changes of color on the surface. In some pieces, I also include a woven metal fabric that is handwoven out of wire on a floor loom. It excites me to juxtapose the visual softness of cloth with the strength of wire and metal.
