2026, Gum over cyanotype on paper, 7.5x10 in.
By mixing digital capture and manipulation with historical printing processes, the series seeks to achieve a harmonious composition by exploring the elements of chance in both processes. The digital manipulation that produces the negative used for printing always includes the face of the artist along with images of urban landscapes emphasizing text and pattern. The images are always layered whole cloth. Additional texture elements are then applied. The end result of this manipulation has much variation depending on the starting image, whether the image was in color or converted to grayscale, and on how many images were layered just to name a few factors.
This digital composition is then printed using cyanotype and gum bichromate. These historical processes produce variations of their own in texture, color, value, etc., depending on factors such as humidity, tools used for application, and the handling process.
