Bengali painter Bireswar Sen's highly regarded miniatures measure only a few inches, but the artwork shows infinite distances as well as lofty Himalayan snow peaks. Born in Calcutta in 1897, Sen grew up during a renaissance in the arts. He found inspiration in many areas, including the newly founded Bengal School of painting, a devotion to the Great Goddess and a natural tendency to be immersed in nature. On tiny sheets of paper, using the wash technique that he knew well from Bengal, Sen created paintings that portray an almost unattainable intersection between the intimate and the infinite.
